Sabrina Klein is sole proprietor of creative education consulting, with more than 20 years in the nonprofit world as a service provider, executive director, board member and consultant to an array of arts and arts education organizations. Sabrina is a theatre artist, nonprofit leader, educator, research and mother (not necessarily in that order). All her life’s training has brought her to the belief (for which she sees daily proof) that artists and art-making truly make the world a better place, and her work is committed to help those who make the world a better place do their work more efficiently, effectively and powerfully . She has led arts and education nonprofits since 1986–most recently as Executive Director of the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts in Berkeley, and before that as Executive Director of Theatre Bay Area, the nation’s largest regional service organization for theatre and dance artists. Since 1995, she has facilitated over 40 community, staff, artist and board conversations to articulate the values that artists share with other community members, learning about what really matters to people in their work and helping them plan to act on those values in a meaningful and sustainable way.

Klein began consulting with nonprofit and government entities part-time in 1990 as part of other work and became a full-time consultant in 2006.

A note about coaching:

With 22 years actually in the field as a nonprofit manager, and 7 years coaching experience, Klein feels very strongly that too often EDs are expected to be superheroes, to know everything about everything. It’s a ridiculous expectation, but not an uncommon one. Executive coaching helps EDs by giving them a consistent, confidential and reliable ally, with experience and knowledge of resources not always readily available to or accessible by busy EDs who already have too much to do.

Klein coaches EDs and boards of directors on such confidential administrative issues as:

  • Brainstorming and problem-solving for EDs and senior staff
  • Hiring, disciplinary action and termination of employees
  • Conflict resolution and mediation
  • Strategies for staff coaching and support (especially with challenging staff members)
  • Clarification of professional and personal goals, and plans to achieve them
  • Staff searches, job descriptions, interview protocols and offer letters
  • Budget development, reports, and tracking
  • Board development and board relations with staff
  • Strategic planning preparation and communications
